Announcing our Autumn 2025 List

As the leaves begin to fall and the football season hits its stride, we’re delighted to introduce our Autumn 2025 collection – four remarkable books that explore the beautiful game's deep roots in Merseyside and beyond.

And Then There Was Football: Merseyside Football, A History: 1878-2025 by Philip Ross (£30.00, hardback)

We’re particularly proud to present this landmark publication. Not since the 1960s has a single volume been written about the history of Merseyside football. Philip Ross has delivered something truly special: the definitive history of football across the region, from its Victorian origins to the present day. This isn't just about Everton and Liverpool – though their stories are brilliantly told – but about every level of the men’s and women’s game: the church teams, works sides, amateur leagues - more than 100 teams at different levels have their stories told. With detailed club summaries, comprehensive appendices of competition winners, and previously untold stories of forgotten clubs and characters, this 470-page volume is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand how football became embedded in Merseyside's DNA. Out 6 November.

The Emerald Evertonian: The Life and Times of Peter Farrell by Rob Sawyer (£18.99, hardback)

Rob Sawyer, whose biography of TG Jones was shortlisted for Sports Book of the Year, returns with this compelling portrait of Peter Farrell – a man revered as one of Ireland and Everton's greatest captains. From Dalkey to Goodison Park, Farrell's journey took him to that unforgettable moment on 21 September 1949 when his goal sealed England's first-ever home defeat to a foreign nation. Drawing on meticulous research and previously unseen sources, Rob charts not just Farrell's distinguished playing career but his later years in management and his dignified 25-year struggle with dementia. As current Everton captain Séamus Coleman says: "A terrific story... I am sure that it will appeal to football supporters beyond Everton and Ireland." Out 27 October.

A Different Road by Bob Latchford (£12.99, paperback)

For the first time, one of the 1970s' greatest goalscorers has put his life story down on paper, which has been updated as a paperback edition. Between 1972 and 1983, Bob Latchford scored more league goals than any other First Division player. At Everton, only Dixie Dean and Graeme Sharp have bettered his phenomenal record. Yet despite being one of the most prominent footballers of his era, Bob remained uneasy with fame. In this thoughtful and revealing autobiography, he takes us through his journey from Birmingham to becoming British football's most expensive player, his seven years at Goodison, and an Indian summer at Swansea that almost brought an unlikely First Division title. This is a rare thing: a deeply honest and poignant account that shows the human face behind the hero. As Ian Herbert wrote in The Independent, it "provides a tantalising sense of how Everton might just have become the force and the name in the world game that Liverpool proved to be." Out 30 October.

Money Can't Buy Us Love: Everton in the 1960s by Gavin Buckland (£17.99, paperback)

The first part of Gavin Buckland's epic trilogy chronicling John Moores' three-decade ownership of Everton is now available in paperback. When Moores took control in 1960, he set in motion a chain of events that still affects English football today. This forensic study examines how Moores and Harry Catterick took the 'Mersey Millionaires' to the summit of the game, against the backdrop of the 1960s' cultural revolution. Gavin delves into the archives to provide definitive accounts of the doping allegations of 1962/63, the 1964 match-fixing scandal that ended Tony Kay's career, and the shock sale of Alan Ball. As Toffeeweb notes, this is "a go to reference tome for scholars of the School of Science." Out 2 October.
